Lauren Housley est une artiste soul qui nous vient d’Angleterre. Elle s’est faite remarquer par son premier EP One Step Closer  sorti l’été 2012, puis s’est rappelée à notre bon souvenir en décembre dernier avec son single de noël Christmas is Coming. Nul doute que l’année 2014 s’annonce prometteuse pour la jeune chanteuse. En effet, Lauren a annoncé qu’elle sortira une mixtape gratuite ce début d’année. Pour le moment, elle se consacre à sa mini-tournée française en compagnie de son guitariste et co-auteur Thomas Dibb. Rencontre avec cette prodige de la scène de Manchester.

Parlons de musique. Comment es-tu arrivée à la musique et qu’en ressens-tu ?
Let’s talk about music. How did you come to music and what it makes you feel?

Hé bien, j’ai toujours aimé la musique, et j’ai toujours été une interprète. J’aime chanter depuis que  je suis toute petit, mais ça ne fait que depuis 7 ans que j’ai trouvé le courage de chanter devant un public en direct. J’ai commencé à me produire dans des soirées « open mic / chante qui veut » et des sessions de bœuf. Ainsi de suite jusqu’à commencer à jouer mes propres dates de concert à travers le Royaume-Uni. Je trouve qu’écouter et jouer de la musique est une façon d’oublier, de canaliser, les tracas du quotidien. Je suppose que c’est une forme saine de s’évader et que cela peut être thérapeutique. Le moment où quelqu’un interprète est en scène, tout ce qui compte est la chanson qui est jouée.

Hello, it’s lovely to speak with you. Well, I have always loved music and I have always been a performer. I loved singing when I was younger but it wasn’t until about 7 years ago that I had the confidence to sing in front of a live audience. I started by performing at local open mic events and jams and eventually started playing featured gigs across the UK. I find that listening to and playing music is a way of forgetting about, sometimes channeling, the worries of every day life, I suppose it’s a healthy form of escapism and can be therapeutic. The moment someone is on stage performing, all that matters is the song they are playing.

What are your main influences? Musical or else.

La vie, l’amour, l’excitation, se sentir nerveux, Lauryn Hill, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Otis Redding, faire des rencontres, lire des livres, voir des films, les amis, la famille, ce que l’on expérimente chaque jour, les rêves, les batailles, les réflexions, voyager, Prince, Joni Mitchell… La liste est infinie.

Life, love, excitement, feeling nervous, Lauryn Hill, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Otis Redding, meeting new people, reading books, watching films, friends, family, everyday experiences, dreams, struggles, over-thinking, travelling, Prince, Joni Mitchell….list goes on.

Que peux-tu nous dire de ton style de chant?
Can you tell us more about your singing style?

Ma façon de chanter est en constamment en évolution, car j’apprends en permanence ce qui fonctionne et ce qui l’est moins. Je dirais que si on écoute bien, on retrouve les inflexions de certains des artistes Soul que j’adore écouter. Sans même m’en rendre compte, vos influences viennent s’entremêler dans votre son. Je suppose que depuis que j’ai commencé à chanter avec un groupe derrière moi, j’ai pu me concentrer sur un chant venant du coeur plus qu’essayer de chanter dans un style particulier.

My singing style is constantly developing as I am always learning about what works and what doesn’t but I would say you can hear inflections of some of the Soul artists I love listening to. Without even knowing, your influences weave their way into your sound. I suppose ever since I started singing, because I have a performance background, I have tried to concentrate on performing from the heart and connecting with the songs I sing than trying to sing in a particular style.

Nous avons entendu ton teaser de l’EP One Step Closer, c’est très bon. J’ai lu que tu avais enregistré tout l’album en seulement trois jours. C’est prodigieux. Comment y es – tu parvenue?
We’ve heard the teaser of your EP, One Step Closer, it sounds really good. I’ve read that you recorded the album in 3 days. That’s amazing. How did you managed to do it?

Merci beaucoup, je suis contente que ça t’es plu. One Step Closer était le premier projet de musique originale que j’ai réalisé, avec l’aide de mon co-auteur, Thomas Dibb. Je savais que je voulais écrire des titres mélancoliques et émouvants, et les enregistrer dans la veine du son de Stax et de la Motown. Je pense que la clé de la réalisation de One Step Closer en si peu de temps est que nous étions bien organisés et inspirés par la musique que j’adore! Nous avons embauché du matériel vintage comme un Fender Rhodes et une batterie Ludwig, ce qui donne un son authentique aux chansons . C’était une idée concrète, qu’avec travail assidu et persévérance, quelque chose de vrai émergerait.

Thank you very much, I’m glad you like it. ‘One Step Closer’ was the first original music project I planned and completed along side my co-writer and collaborator, Thomas Dibb. I knew I wanted to write some soulful, heartfelt numbers and then to record them in a way that drew influence from the sound of Stax and Motown and I think the key to getting ‘One Step Closer’ written, recorded, mixed and released in such a short space of time was being organized and inspired by the music I love! We hired in vintage equipment such as a Fender Rhodes and a vintage Ludwig drum kit, which gave the tracks a real authentic sound. It was a solid idea that, through hard work and persistence, became something real.

Quelle est la signification cachée derrière ce titre?
What is the meaning behind that title?

One Step Closer est le titre d’une des cinq chansons du mini-album, mais j’ai pensé que ce serait un titre approprié à l’ensemble. J’adore le dicton « la vie est un voyage, pas une destination » et j’essaie de vivre ma vie avec cette croyance. J’ai tellement appris du processus d’écriture, l’enregistrement et je suis encore en train d’apprendre. Cet EP était la première pierre fondatrice de ma carrière en tant que chanteuse – compositeur.

‘One Step Closer’ is the title of one of the 5 songs from the EP but I thought it was an appropriate title for the entire EP. I love the saying ‘life is a journey, not a destination’ and I try to live my life with this belief. I learnt so much from the process of writing and recording it and I am still learning all the time, this EP was the first stepping-stone in my career as a singer and songwriter.

Quels étaient les thèmes que tu voulais chanter pour cet album ?
What are the thematics you wanted to sing for this EP?

Le thème principal qui traverse l’EP est le sentiment et l’expérience d’avancer, d’aller de l’avant, progresser et le faire pour une raison. Que l’on se sente bien de le faire ou pas, nous devons aller vers de nouvelles expériences dans la vie à un moment donné. Il parle aussi d’autres sujets, comme le changement, l’amour, les déceptions, la croyance en soi et les peines de coeur.

The main theme running through the whole EP is a feeling and the experience of moving on, progressing and doing so for a reason, whether it feels great to do so or not, we all have to move on to different and new things in our life’s at some point. It deals with many other topics too, such as change, love, disappointment, self-belief and heartache.

Comment se passe votre relation avec ton co-auteur Thomas Dibb?
Tell us more about your relationship with your co-writer Thomas Dibb…

J’ai rencontré  Tom  à l’université de Rotherdam, où on réside. Nous avons des goûts musicaux très proches, ce qui sert de base pour notre collaboration. Nous sommes toujours de grands fans de Freddie Mercury/Queen fans! Quand nous avons tous les deux déménagé à Nexcastle pour aller à la fac, Tom m’a entendu chanter et a adoré le son de ma voix! Le reste appartient à l’histoire. Nous avons commencé à composer ensemble, et grâce à lui, j’ai trouvé le courage de chanter de chanter en live dans des soirées avec Tom au piano / guitare. Nous collaborons ensemble depuis ce jour. C’est un musicien incroyable et un très bon compositeur. On travaille bien ensemble et je pense que c’est parce que l’on se complète dans nos forces et faiblesses.

I met Tom at college in Rotherham, which is our home town. We had very a similar taste in music, which was the main basis for our connection. We were and still are big Freddie Mercury/Queen fans! When we both moved to Newcastle at the same time to go to university, Tom heard me sing for the first time and loved my voice! The rest is history. We started writing together instantly and thanks to him I managed to gain the courage to start singing at live music nights, (accompanied by Tom on guitar/piano). We have worked with each other ever since. He is an incredible musician, and a great songwriter. We work very well together and I think part of that is because we balance out many of our strengths and weaknesses.

A l’écoute de votre superbe musique, on se demande quand tu vas sortir un véritable album…
Hearing your beautiful music… Any idea to when you’ll release a real full length album?

 J’adorerai faire ça. Je sais que j’ai une année très occupée devant moi, ce qui est très excitant. Si tout va bien, j’espère commencer à enregistrer pour mon premier album cet été. A suivre!

I would really love to release an album! I know I have a busy year ahead of me, which is very exciting. But all being well I hope to start recording for my debut album sometime in the summer. Watch this space!

Que fais tu pour passer le temps?
What do you do for hobbies?

J’adore parcourir les étalages d’occasions et les antiquaires, pour trouver des petits trésors et des choses vintage que tu ne pourrais trouver autrement. J’adore cuisiner, essayer de nouvelles recettes, faire des rencontres, aller au théâtre et voir des concerts. J’aime aussi peindre, voyager, visiter des amis et la famille, faire du sport.

I love looking around second hand stalls and antique markets, finding small treasures and vintage bits you can’t find anywhere else. I love cooking, trying new recipes, socialising, going out to theatre shows and seeing live music gigs. I like to paint, travel, visit friends and family and exercise.

Tu seras bientôt en France, qu’attends tu de ce pays? C’est un endroit que tu aimes?
You’ll be soon in France, what do you expect from this country? Do you like this country, land or culture or else?

Je suis si excitée de venir jouer en France. J’ai entendu dire que les Français adore la musique live et surtout pour la Soul. C’est la première fois que je viens en France pour jouer pour des concerts ouverts au public. Je vais jouer à Lyon deux fois et à Paris aussi. J’ai hâte de découvrir cette culture et voir comment les gens vont réagir à ma musique. J’espère que cette fois-ci, je vais avoir le temps de visiter, dévorer de la nourriture française et même prendre un peu de vin.

I’m so excited to come to France to perform. I hear French people have a great love and appreciation for live music and specifically live, soul music. This is the first time I am coming to France to perform at venues open to the public, I will be playing a couple of gigs in Lyon and Paris this time. I really can’t wait to embrace the culture and see how people react to my music. I’m hoping to have time to do some sight-seeing, eat plenty of French food and maybe even a little wine.
